Like A Breath Of Perfumed Fresh Air

Perfumes are classified and named variedly. The concentration of the aromatic compounds or odorants diluted in solvents give perfumes their specification. Perfume Extract contains 20 to 40 percent odorants, Eau de Parfume has 10 to 30 percent odorants, Eau de Toilette includes 5 to 20 percent of aromatic compounds and Eau de Cologne has 2 to 3 percent of aromatic compounds.

A sweet welcome with fragrant, fresh air in a car or room interiors, air fresheners do apt justice to mood swings. However, scent oils are also used in shampoos, make-ups, soaps, detergents, flavoring foods and aromatherapy. Aromatherapy and Aromachology have gained impetus due to the variety natural aromas that have different healing effects. Also, incense scents are used for therapeutic and religious purposes.

Perfumes are commonly identified by the distinct fragrance oils mixed with solvents. Top notes mark fresh, sharp and impulsive essence. These scents evaporate quickly, for example citrus and ginger essence. Middle or Heart notes are pleasant aromas that are experienced with time, especially after 2 minutes to 1 hour. Lavender and rose odors are some of the types. Conversely, top and middle notes together are identified as Head notes, namely the bergamot and neroli scents. Base notes give out sensual, rich and deep essence after 30 minutes, usually. Musk, vetiver, patchouli and some more plant resins are the types.

Colognes are certainly a composition of aromatic compounds, solvents and a number of other compounds. The aromatic compounds are extracted from natural sources and synthetic sources. Nature bestows with a number of essences to the living and thus reminds us of the botanical beauty.

Flower blossoms, leaves and twigs, roots and bulbs, seeds, fruits, wood, bark, resin and lichens are plant resources.

Chypre is the French name for Cyprus, a family of woody and floral scents in similar such as oak moss, bergamot, vetiver and patchouli. This is a common choice for men as well women.

Fougere scents are common amongst the men though the word means fem in French. The family defines sharp as well as woody and herbaceous aromas of lavender, coumarin and oakmoss.

Oceanic or marine fragrances are there to offer natural aura of the sea and oceans and mountains.

Flora as well as the fauna, both contributes to the world of perfumery. Musk, civet cats, castoreum or beavers, ambergris and honeycomb are animal traces for exotic aromas.

Natural musk is obtained mainly from a certain gland in the abdomen of the musk deer. A similar odor is emitted from the glands of musk ox, musk rat and musk shrew and musk beetle. However the original exotic fragrant of the male musk is rarely found and are highly priced. From the legal perspective, it is unethical to obtain this fragrance, since musk deer are depleting to the point of extinction.

Ambergris is obtained from the intestines of the sperm whale. Since the rare availability of the ambergris, the scent is priced high.

Musk and ambergris have found similar alternatives. Synthetic musk and ambergris are now widely used every where around the globe. Where natural resources offer limited assortments, synthetic compounds offer a large variety of aromas and are economical. Alcohols, aldehydes, esters and terpenes are some of the chemicals.

Floral scents cannot withstand heat and distillation. Earlier, enfleurage was a method to extract floral aromas. Animal fat was placed on a glass sheet and saturated with floral scents from the flower petals. Then they were washed with alcohol, the method known as filtration. A practice of the 18th and 19th century. As science elevated methods of making perfumes, solvent extraction or dry cleaning came into being.

Maceration is a process similar to enfleurage which is performed at high temperatures. Flower petals are warmed in hot vegetable oil or animal fat and then filtered and cooled. This does not require ether as medium.

Expression is a technique used on citrus sources, especially on the peels. Citrus fruits are not possible to be treated with distillation, thus, expression retain the intensity and essence of the fruits.

Jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, wax and ethanol are certain solvents commonly used in making toilet water. Jojoba and coconut oils have medicinal uses and are considerably used in hair care and cosmetic products.

Last but not the least scents or toilet water are certainly packaged in glass and aluminum containers. Colognes are necessary to be protected from heat, light and oxygen. Colored and faceted glasses as well as opaque mediums are used for a long shelf life. Fashionable designs and motifs with embellishments on truly vibrant colors definitely are an augmentation.
